What is Hydronic Heating?

Hydronic Heating System

Hydronic heating is a technical term that is often referred to in-floor heating, underfloor heating or radiant floor heating. A hydronic system warms a space by heating water in a boiler, tankless water heater, or hot water tank, then moving the hot liquid through pipes beneath the floor. Hydronic heating is an energy-efficient way to provide even and consistent heat in a home.

How Hydronic Heating Works

To warm a space, a hydronic heating system (also known as a radiant heating system) uses tubing to distribute heated liquids, such as hot water, throughout the home. This heating system uses a closed loop system that allows for temperature customization while maintaining a high level of energy efficiency.

A hydronic heating system could previously only be installed in the concrete slab, such as beneath the bathroom tiles. However, with advanced technology and installation techniques, now you can benefit from the hydronic heating system in a home with any type of modern floorings, including hardwood, carpet or vinyl. With that said, it is critical to consult with both the floor installer and the heating system technician before making any changes to your heating system so that they can make any necessary adjustments to the materials or installation procedures.

Components of Hydronic Heating

In Floor Heating System

Boiler System

A boiler is a device that heats the liquid in a system.

Heat Conductor

Water is used in most systems, but other liquids can be used in some.

Manifold

A manifold is the hub for directing the liquid flow.

Tubing

To transfer heated liquid, loops of tubes are installed inside the concrete or beneath the flooring. PEX tubing is the industry standard for all hydronic systems.

Heat Exchanger

The heat exchanger is responsible for transferring heat from the tubes to the room.

Pump

The liquid is circulated through the tubes and into different heating zones by the pump. Pumps ensure that water is delivered in a consistent and even manner to all of the rooms.
