3 Common Reasons Why Your Furnace is Leaking
Since your furnace is an essential part of your home, it’s understandable that when it leaks, it can cause panic and stress. Leaking water can not only affect the efficiency of your furnace, but can also cause other severe problems in your home. It’s important to know what the signs of the three most common furnace problems are, so that you know when it’s time to call a furnace repairman.
Condensation Leak
A condensation leak occurs when moisture accumulates within the furnace. When you use a high-efficiency furnace to heat your home, you’ll notice furnace condensation – this is particularly so when using a more recent model, which are more energy-efficient than older models.
To prevent condensation, a built-in cooling exhaust system removes the moisture through a PVC line which is connected to either your basement’s floor drainage or an exterior wall of your home. If the condensation pump or PVC lines are damaged, cracked, or faulty, then condensation cannot be removed from your furnace.
Leaking Humidifier
It’s important to know if your furnace has a humidifier installed. Humidifiers are usually installed at the request of homeowners to improve indoor air quality. However, because the purpose of a humidifier is to collect and disperse steam, you might notice it leaking if it malfunctions. Clogs or cracks in your furnace’s humidifier can cause water to leak into or under your furnace.
Filter Blockage
Your furnace’s filter is critical for trapping airborne particles and contaminants, preventing them from entering your furnace. If your furnace filter is wet, clogged, or dirty, air cannot flow properly through the appliance and additional strain can be placed on other parts of the furnace. This may lead to excessive condensation and water leaking from your furnace.
We advise that you check and replace your furnace’s filters at least once every three months to help prevent and avoid leaks and other costly furnace repairs.
